We’ve already seen quite a few changes for motorists in September 2021, from the new Plate Changes (BS145e) to the introduction of E10 fuel at the pumps. But for those who are thinking of heading abroad with your lease car, not only have you got to make sure you have a valid VE103B you’ve also got some covering up to do.
Time to buy a UK Sticker
The UK Government has published guidance from Tuesday 28th September 2021 and insists that you must remove GB stickers on your car and on your number plates, replacing them with a UK sticker or a new set of plates.
The rules state that anyone with a GB sticker on their car now needs to replace it with a new UK one if they are taking their car abroad.
Those that don’t display their UK badges may be refused entry to some countries.
How long has the GB sticker been allowed on vehicles?
The GB sticker has been on British drivers’ cars for 111 years and has been valid on cars and vans from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The United Nations was notified of the change by the UK government stating it wanted to change the distinguishing sign used on vehicles from GB to UK.
Government Guidelines
According to the revised government guidelines, anyone considering a trip abroad in their car needs “to display a UK sticker clearly on the rear of your vehicle if your number plate has any of the following:
- a GB identifier with the Union flag
- a Euro symbol
- a national flag of England, Scotland or Wales
- numbers and letters only – no identifier/flag
If your number plate already includes a UK identifier with the Union flag (Union Jack), you do not need a UK sticker.
