Plans to restrict your accelerator pedal

Accelerator Restrictions when reaching the speed limit

The European Union is proposing a kit that restricts your accelerator pedal once the speed limit has been reached.

To de-activate the system, the driver has to push hard on accelerator pedal de-activate the system.

The propoal will be discussed by the EU in a meeting on Thursday 8th October 2020 and should the system be implemented, it could also apply to vehicles in the UK.

How do the Car Makers feel about this?

Car manufacturers have suggested other ways to implement a warning to the driver, these include a warning light or sound coming from the dashboard.

Many vehicles already include traffic sign recognition and speed limits which is received from the Satellite Navigation data built in to many cars.

Saving Lives

Elzbieta Bienkowska an EU Commissioner said “Every year, 25,000 people lose their lives on our roads. The vast majority of these accidents are caused by human error.

“With the new advanced safety features that will become mandatory, we can have the same kind of impact as when safety belts were first introduced.”

The UK has already agreed in principle with the EU to adopt the new standards, if implemented. But it has been sourced that the British Government will not agree to the systems until it can see a futre in any trade deals.
