Will my Short-Term Car accept E10 Unleaded?

August 26, 2021

E10 Petrol

As well as the new BS145e plate standard, being introduced on the 1st September 2021, there is also a change in the fuel at UK forecourts with the new E10 unleaded fuel becoming the standard, replacing E5.

Why is the fuel changing?

E10 is essentially a greener fuel and is set to reduce CO2 emissions in the UK. The main difference of the new fuel, is that the E10 petrol contains 10% ethanol, compared with the 5% ethanol found in the E5 petrol.

It has been estimated that it is the equivalent of taking 350,000 cars off the road. (Source: RAC).

Whilst the switchover to E10 won’t be immediately after the 1st September 2021, many companies have already said that they will be offering E10 from this September including Sainsbury’s and Shell.

Those in Diesel cars need not panic! The change is only for those who have vehicles with Petrol engines.

Can I still buy E5 fuel?

Yes, you will still be able to buy E5 petrol from most major forecourts, however, it has been noted that this will only be available as a “Premium Unleaded” fuel with an octane of 97 plus.
