5 things to consider with choosing an Electric Car

February 21, 2023

We all know that the government ban on Diesel and Petrol car sales is coming and many of us haven’t opted to make the move to an electric car yet, but having received a higher number of enquiries recently on electric cars, we thought we’d use this article to put together a list of 5 things to consider when choosing an electric vehicle.

Here are the five things to consider:

Charging

Having a charger at your home, is one of the most important factors when considering an electric car. If you don’t already have a Home Electric Charger (Clickable Link) then you can do a survey and get prices ready for installation.

The costs of charging is extremely important and we’d highly recommend speaking to your energy supplier to find out if they have any special offers for charging your electric vehicle at night. If you haven’t already got a smart meter, this may require a morning or an afternoon at home, whilst your electricity supplier fits a unit. We highly recommend Octopus Energy (Get £50 via the link).

If you park on the street or in a communeral area, then you need to work out where your nearest charging point is located. As well as the higher costs involved with public charging. We’d highly recommend Zap Map for finding your nearest chargers.

Budget

Can you afford an Electric Car? They are more expensive than petrol or diesel cars but if you can utilise home charging, they can work out cheaper to run than a fossil fueled car.

For those looking at Salary Sacrifice schemes or you are a company car driver, then the savings can be even bigger. There are currently some excellent incentives to those who opt for an electric car as their company vehicle.

Don’t forget that electric cars have been around for a few years now, so you can also choose a used example which could potencially save you hundreds of pounds.

Day to Day

You need to work out if an electric vehicle fits in with your work or lifestyle. Have a think about the types of trips you have taken over the last 12 months.

If your weekly driving routines includes a few school runs and the daily commute to the office then an Electric Car will definately fit in to your lifestyle.

If you drive a lot of miles on the motorway, depending on the vehicle, choosing an EV might not be the best choice. You would need a vehicle with a good range and your routes would need to include rapid charging to make your journeys worthwhile.

Available Cars

Within this article, it is quite important not to just look at our short-term car lease and car subscription options, as many of the readers will be looking to make a purchase or choose a long-term car lease. So therefore, when looking at EV’s look at all of the options available.

Many of the car manufacturers are adding different electric cars to their range every month and don’t dismiss the brands such as Kia, Hyundai, MG and even GWM Ora. There cars are very affordable and offer some impressive figures in terms of range and technology.

Mercedes-Benz also seems to have a great range of electric cars which they call their EQ range. From something small like the EQA to the impressive EQS, it is well worth a look.
